2024 J.J. Weaver
OLB, Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky outside linebacker J.J. Weaver has been named the winner of the 12th annual Freddie Solomon Community Spirit Award, a tribute to athletes who make an extraordinary impact on and off the field. This prestigious honor, named after NFL legend and two-time Super Bowl champion Freddie Solomon, celebrates Weaver’s remarkable dedication to giving back, especially through mental health advocacy and support for grieving children.
Weaver’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Born with polydactyly, he endured bullying for being different and later faced unimaginable challenges during his college years, including the loss of his father to homicide, a season-ending knee injury, and the death of a beloved coach. But rather than letting grief define him, Weaver turned pain into purpose, becoming a powerful advocate for counseling and mental health.
In 2023, Weaver launched LINC (Loss Inspiring New Connections), the first peer-led grief counseling group at the University of Kentucky. Thanks to his leadership, the program received a $40,000 grant, allowing it to grow and provide vital support for students. His advocacy extended beyond campus, as he shared his story at national events, inspiring countless others to seek help and embrace healing.
Weaver’s efforts don’t stop there—he’s hosted free football camps, diversity talks, back-to-school drives, and bike giveaways, making a lasting impact on his community. A three-time team captain and Kentucky football standout, Weaver also shines on the field, ranking among UK’s all-time leaders in tackles for loss and sacks.
From overcoming adversity to creating change, J.J. Weaver exemplifies what it means to be a true champion—in every sense of the word.
